Lincoln Zephyr to Grace Sidewalk, Subway Walls
This week, Ford will launch a a new campaign for its Lincoln Zephyr mid-sized sedan which will include the usual stuff like television and print but Zephyr ads will also be seen street level with 60 foot ads alongside sidewalks that use the new Submedia technology which turns a fixed image into a motion picture when a person passes by. Similar ads will also be used inside subway tunnels.

How will the submedia effect work at street level? Wouldn't a person have to be passing by fairly quickly?
Sounds a lot like a scene from Minority Report.
I just saw one of these displays today. It really made me do a double take. I had just left Macy's and was heading over to meet a friend, when I saw the ad at the corner of my eye. It was like a scene at of minoity report. I have no idea how this works, but it makes you feel like you are walking through a commercial. I went by it several time in either direction at slow speeds and fast. It worked each time.
Does anyone know how this technolog works? Is it persistence of vision or some other effect?
I am an artist and work in film to pay the rent. I think this is just off the hook. I would like to incoroprate this in an art project, so any insight as to how this is done would be greatly appreciated.
