Nine Tips on Proper Use of Social Media For Brands

"There are a lot of social media experts out there, and I'm not one of them. I don't think your business needs a Facebook Page (actually, I say that they're largely bunk); meanwhile, I feel that a lot of "blogger outreach" is an outright waste of time. In fact, I argue that you should probably ignore a lot of tools and features out there."

Well yikes. That's harsh. But oh so insightful. Do give Eric Karajaluoto's More mess; less B.S. (or: Nine simple suggestions for using social media) for some insightful, um, insight or the merits of social media and how companies can tread properly through the overblown hype of social media.

Hmmm. Yup, everyone is a social media "expert." Hey, what else can ad folks and dig-heads talk about -- radio or the death of FLASH? So we hear the same old same old blather about listening to and building "conversations" (even my agency has gotten on board with the white paper thing.)

But, lets stay tuned into the fact that many of the tools are in early stage. And, we haven't had much time to really figure it all out. Hey, twitter was sorta unknown last December (note, we did our first twitter campaign for the Oregon State fair last August -- follow the giant tomato that was on tour.)

So relax. Get more experience. Experiment using your client's or your own money. Think much HARDER. The smart ones always win.
