CA Rep is Super Bummed About Ladymags' Refusal to Stomp Out Cigs

camel_no_9.jpg

See those ultra-luxe Camel No. 9's at left? Pretty, right? Well, Democrat Lois Capps of California wants you to know they're dressed to kill. And not in the sexy way.

The CA representative is the leader of a group that wants to get ladymag publishers to stop pushing these and other smoking ads. But editors have expressed apathy toward the campaign, with only 3 out of 11 responding to Capps' demand:

Vogue editor Florio says screw you, pass restrictions through Congress. Glamour states simply that while smoking is discouraged in its articles, smoking ads remain legal. And W, the Switzerland in all this, says it wouldn't mind engaging in a 'constructive dialogue' about the issue. (Maybe they just don't want to hurt her feelings.)

Capps screams "hypocrisy!" and marches on.

Why is this so bad? You have beauty ads that result in anorexia and shatter the confidence of many teens. You have burger ads, Kraft, Lays, and a load of products with enough salt and sodium that is harmful. Not to mention alcohol ads.

So tell me again, why is this so bad?

if I hand you a wrapped stack of hundreds are you handing it back... mags can no longer say no to cigarette ads on the back cover or to multi page ads for prescription drugs.

Cigarettes and other drug marketers are goosing the guerilla tactics to a new level.

Lit cigs being sucked on with glee by VIP and BMOC types on TV again!!!! and ads directed at children and young woman are going to get heavy in the coming months. Woman and young adults are easy prey and seem to get hooked hardest on cxxxx and cigarettes too. Have you noticed the twist on TRUTH!?! First TRUTH was our PS shigitz, but, now we are twisting the use to mean cigarettes are cooler than XXX! Our lobby effortds have paid off and now the gloves are coming off in the USA. We give free cxxxxxx to all military personel in Iraq and Afganistan.

They come in the cute packages along with their complimentary toothbrushes and minitubes of toothpaste, but, nothing compares with MAD Men.

muhahhahahaaa!

Thanks for posting this story on Camel No. 9s targeting young women and teens. I appreciate the discussion of this important issue. I have been working to raise awareness of this marketing and to develop ways for people to respond to it.
