Newsflash! Times Square Enters Second Life

Yawn. Oh sorry. We have news to report here but we just get bored sometimes hearing the same things over and over and over again. Especially about mediums du jour (OK, OK, it's a world that took lots of blood and sweat to build) that are tinier than the balls on an account exec standing in front of a client who says the work won't "resonate" with the target audience.

Now what were we talking about? Oh yea. Times Square and all of New York is getting its SL freak treatment. That's Second Life for those of you that have been untainted by Second Life Herald or Nissan's SL automobile vending machine. The Ad Option, the company that brought American Apparel to Second Life is building out Times Square in Second Life to be completed in time for the ball to virtually drop New Year's Eve. Now, those in Second Life suffering years of real world withdrawal can get a virtual dose of it by visiting the Second Life version of Times Square and all the (oh yes) advertising the place will carry.

From an advertising standpoint, Times Square in Second Life will sell ads to advertisers who don't want to bother with building out their own Second Life SIMS (that's the cool world they use to describe Second Life locations) or participate in any active manner with the community but would rather haul in lazy, old-school advertising methods and slap them up for all to see or, more likely, easily ignore by never setting foot in the virtual Times Square. Then again, that's the SL purists we're talking about and their days, whether they like it or not, are numbered. Where there's people, there's advertising. Always has been. Always will be. The rest of New Yorlk will fully attack Second Life in early 2007.

Couldn't someone else just go build another times square? What's the point?

My experience's with second life has been people standing around having conversations that are actually too banal to have in real life, and trying, unsuccessfully to gamble. So it's like the web, but even less useful.

About as useful, and "creative," the Ad Option's site. Lip service pwns.

I hope they build it like Times Square circa 1979 with virtual prostitutes and animated assaults.
