Talking VWs Spice Up Suburbia. Or Not.

In case you're not yet sick of Volkswagens with German accents and too many opinions, here's fresh fodder for the pile: "Carefree Maintenance," by Crispin Porter + Bogusky.

In addition to plugging a current VW model (fortified with free scheduled maintenance!), it features cameos from the classic Bug and the '63 VW bus, which sounds sort of stoned.

Whatever's clever, dude. Oh, yeah, one more thing: Heidi Klum couldn't make the shoot this time, but there's a Zoloft-enhanced man covered in motor oil, and I guess that's almost the same thing.

The worst part of this ad is that they compare the VW service with that of a Benz. If they knew their competition, they'd know you receive free oil changes with a Benz as well as a free loaner vehicle. And with a Benz you only change the oil every 10,000 miles.

Why are you posting this now? This ad has been on TV for a loooooong time. Maybe you should more cleverly find something to write about.

I love Crispin, but this is a big giant turd. It's nothing. Being covered in motor oil is not funny, nor is it relevant (no one changes their own oil), not even as a metaphor.

And the only reason I'm being so poopy pants is that with a brief that said "Free scheduled maintenance with a new VW," the brand deserves better.

Even when your highest aim is merely "to inform," as this ad so wienily set out to do, you don't *have* to phone it in. Check out Arnold's "Full-sized spare" ad. At least it was based on a human truth:

Note the decent writing and sense of character. Note the complete lack of confusing messages coming from inanimate talking objects.

Someone awesome in advertising once said "If we had more time, we would've made it simpler." Please God, Crispin, take more time. Do less better.
