Apple Removes Mad Men's Cigarrette
In what can only be described as supremely idiotic, the cigarette in the hand of the man who appears in the famed Mad Men promotional image was digitally removed when it was placed on iTunes to promote the sale of Mad Men Season 1. WTF? Does Apple think everyone who downloads this show will then run out to the store and buy a pack of smokes so they can smoke while watching the show? Are people actually this stupid? WTF?

Looks like they've changed the image since you saw that because I thought I'd hop on iTunes to check it out and the cigarette is back as of 1:40 p.m. Pacific. Check it out here.
Imagine if a booby appeared - the horror!
could've been a legal reason. i think it's illegal to show smoking if your target audience includes youth. however, that's an advertising thing, not related to the actual show or any other programs/movies depicting smoking.
Er guys, Steve, I'm hardly a graphics artist, but in your comparison shots
a) the cigarette, if present, would intrude upon the text, and
b) the white cigarette requires a dark background to show up at all, which would mean the surrounding text would be much harder to read.
Isn't it at all possible that there's no conspiracy against smokers but that they just wanted to make the damn thing simple and legible??
I don’t know about your theories, B. You’d have to be a pretty lousy and lazy art director to think the little cigarette spoils the typography. First, black type would read fine over the gray background and white cigarette. There’s black type already on the original TV artwork. Plus, any junior AD knows enough to slightly reduce the image and extend the background tone to make it all fit.
I commend the move. Let's eliminate cigarettes everywhere they cause cancer. It's not about how stupid people are (very) it's about Apple being
considerate enough to not want to be connected to
something that has caused the death or health problems of millions of people through out the world.
I have a Beetles poster from their first U.S. release w/ Paul McCartney holding a cigarette, and the second release they airbrushed it out. It's a rare collectible, good thing we've come so far in the last 45 years

I watched the marathon last night(damn commercials)....ended at 1am...had to wake up at 7am.As ex smoker...they do smoke a lot.In the office ,bedroom,wife....etc
Did they really smoke that much back in the day?Question that popped in to my head...."Why they are not smoking that much anymore?"
