GEICO Gecko Makes Cameo at Houston Zoo

Possibly because he proved such a smashing success in San Diego, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums has brought a man dressed like GEICO's Gecko to the Houston Zoo along with a live gecko exhibit.

Houston Zoo director Rick Barongi called GEICO "a great partner for zoos and aquariums." What?! GEICO on best behaviour amongst wee kiddies and disgruntled animals? We believe it. If we were the most visible insurance option at a zoo, we would be too.

The connection between auto insurance and kids at the zoo was not immediately apparent...but kids have parents who drive them to zoos...and Geico is getting a ton of PR mileage out of this brilliant promotion.

This is a valiant and noble promotion in a way, as it shows how concerned GEICO's spokespeople, spokes-gecko, and public relations department are with creatures that might become roadkill if not placed in places like Zoos and Aquariums.

Thus, the ads achieve icon status in the minds of the upper-middle class, well-educated target market. Altruism is selfishness! Yes!
