Bizarre Nissan Ad Shows Promise for Agency Newbie

nissan_out.jpg

Ads involving carriages in a desperate race against crocodiles, tigers, spherical killer rocks and Satan always make for promising fare, which is why Oregon Trail was so popular, and which is also why this Nissan ad by Curt Detweiler via TBWA\Chiat\Day is so awesome.

Curt's new to LA having just come from TBWA Paris and this work suggests he merits some watching - for slapstick entertainment value if nothing else. And by the way, that image at left has little to do with the video but lots to do with QuickTime being douchey. It is, however, part of the TBWA Nissan campaign. Try not to get confused. - Contributed by Angela Natividad

Ha. Awesome. I don't even follow college football but I'm going to go ahead and say that's the best use of college football mascots ever.

At first, I just thought that was totally bizarre and confusing, but when I realized those were college mascots (I'm not a huge football fan), it was suddenly one of the best ads I've seen this year. Great stuff. The giant nut is the best.

Being a Brit, at first I didn't get it... But when I realized they were all college mascots, then it made sense and I think it's a damn good spot. I used to work (and get drunk) with Curt at JWT in NYC, he's a good guy, even though he always refered to me as "GeorgeFuckingParker." He does really nice stuff, he will do well at Chiat. Just one thing though... Why does Chiat, like BBD&O and others give credit to every fucker in the building. If Curt did the work, he should get the credit. Right now it lists 5 CD's, 2AD's, 2CW's and 4 producers. I'm surprised they haven't listed dear old dead Jay. And where the fuck was Lee... Surfing?
Cheers/George

I totally didn't get it either. But now that I've read the handy Viewer's Guide, I can appreciate its magnificence more fully. Was it just too uncool to give people a clue? What a(n incredibly well-executed, as always) wank. Totally agree with the comment about the credits list. Are people that insecure in this business? That was a rhetorical question.

Just a question: how exactly is this spot "by" Curt D.? He's just one of about five CDs listed in the credits, and not one of the ADs or CWs on the spot.
