Apple to Unveil Million Square Yard Ad, Viewable From Space
MIT Advertising Lab points out Boakes.org has discovered a gigantic iPod ad built on an abandoned mineral mine in Australia. Reportedly, Steve Jobs acquired the land two years ago in a poker game. The ad, supposedly set to be unveiled Saturday is roughly one million square yards in size and looks like the new iPod video. Boakes surmises the unveiling will coincide with Apple's 30th anniversary and may be tied to the launch of Apple's touch screen iPod. The "ad" is viewable on Google Maps here.
Of course, as one commenter points out, it could all be a lead up to an elaborate April Fools Day joke. Or, even better, a new form of satellite map stealth advertising.

Yo Steve. 555 square MILES? It looks to about 2km tall by mayby 1km wide. Please fix the post, lest you start this snowballing with 555 square miles. Is Jobs' property that big maybe?
I smell a pre-emptive April Fools' joke.
Ben might be right. I have actually found out, that Steve is building two (!) gigantic iPod ads. I have made a screenshot on my blog. They are of the same size, but the second one is not quite finished yet...
Not buying it. Not for a second.
Think this will be filed under "Spoofs"...
What about this giant iPod in iRan:

AA, that makes no sense at all. It's unrelated and exactly where are to two giant ipods in that pic? Nice self-promo attempt though:-)
Looks like some kind of water storage system or a sewage lagoon to me.
Sense is made if you realize that Target's bullseye log has been seen on the tops of Target buildings... maybe the iPod's not done yet - or we don't recognize the new screen.

GoogleEarth makes lots of stuff visible to folks who wouldn't normally be flying over buildings in their helicopter, why not fields?
Steve, what about this one then:

Perhaps Staedtler or Faber Castell should use this for an ad to sell their Pencils and Pencil Sharpers.
;)
Pat, not to be a stickler, but according to the scale, it's not even 1x2 km. Looks more like 1x0.3km or 0.3 square km.
Still an interesting idea. Makes me think of the Target logos that have been getting painted on the roofs of some buildings (think I read it in Business 2.0).
