A Fly, A Frog, A Tongue Mysteriously Sell Golf GT
You know, it wasn't until I wrote, "the power of a bug's wings" to describe this new VW Golf GT commercial that I realized what the hell the concept was behind this spot. I haven't heard a VW referred to as a bug for so long, the spot just didn't make sense. Punch buggy, yea. But not bug. Of course, I could be interpreting this completely wrong and the concept's really about the relationship between a tsetse fly and the new Golf's TSI, whatever that is. Give it a watch and tell us what went on in that creative conference room when this thing was dreamed up.

It's a metaphor, plain and simple. It's a kin to saying, "It's like this." Also, contains a perception shift where the old Golf was like a normal fly and the new Golf "is like" this super-fly (not THAT super fly).
Don't over think it. You're killing the funny.

I understand the play on words - but not sure why they are trying to introduce another 'bug' to relate with VW car line. They made it with the 'beetle' seems like they should have left it at that...
It's just a good spot. People don't sit there and think about the deeper connections to the old brand (unless they're in a focus group). It's funny, they see the product, it's somewhat related. Bang.
While I see what Tim H. is saying, the concept of using a bug here is truly a big mistake. It basically says to me that all VW ever did or should be remembered for is The VW Bug. tTo me, it's trying to apply the "bug" brand identity to the whole company. And to be honest, it's not that funny.

Uh, David was happy to attempt to kill Goliath, but he unexpectedly got more power than he could handle. Don't see where the Beetle has anything to do with anything other than a mental tangent, but I had thought Budweiser had cornered commercial frogs.
I hope you have read that as I meant it, not as written - oops! Goliath wanted to take the fly out.
