Hummer Ad Aligned With London Bombings

hummer_shots.jpg

Adrants reader Patrick Bennet ponders the oddity of a Hummer ad placed in conjunction with CNN London bombing stories, writing, "Am I the only one who can't help but notice the irony in the fact that every time I want to watch a video on the CNN website about the latest bombing in London, or deaths in Iraq, or terrorists in general there is a Hummer ad preceding the story?

It's as though Hummer wants to make sure they tie their oil dependency inducing vehicles as closely as possible to the results of that kind of thing.

Am I the only one noticing this? If you were Hummer, is this where you would put your ads? Before stories of terror and mideast instability?"

Either Hummer has intentionally planned this through contextual keywords or it's just an unfortunate side effect of the contextual advertising concept. Of course, Patrick might be one of the few people seeing this placement, having been previously identified, via cookies and behavioral targeting through the likes of Tacoda, as having exhibited car buying behavior elsewhere on the web.

Huh? Boy...that's a stretch.

If I were Hummer, I would want to stress the tank-like features of my product to customers who think that maybe if they just drive everywhere in their Hummer and listen to Hot 97 they'll be safe from bombs (not to mention anthrax).

While your argument about the Hummer/oil dependency link is a shrewd one, it is the mini-fortress aspect of the vehicle that appeals to a lot of customers, and whether you agree with it or not, tying their militaristic vehicles to the fear of terrorism is, while cynical and probably morally unmoored, a "smart" tactic.

There are some people in this world that will see a conspiracy in every commercial they watch, ad/article they read or conversation they evesdrop on.
Yes, potential Hummer customers want terrorism to happen... and up to the early 90s, P&G execs were all Satan worshippers (moon and star logo). Get real.
Note that the graphic regarding this story is a screen grab from CNN... Hmm. Obviously, they're now in collusion with FOX News to end the free world! The libs have come to the "dark side"! Muhuhahahaaa. (Thpppt!)

Oil is not the "root cause" of islamic fascism. It goes a bit further back than that...

I have to agree with Peter above. Hummer has as much to do with the frustratiosn of the fascists who committed the bombing as does the internet and all threats to boundary maintainance in general.

Does Patric think an advert for contraceptives, womens rights or msuic would be just as troubleing

To Eric:

Die painfully okay? Prefearbly by getting crushed to death in a
garbage compactor, by getting your face cut to ribbons with a
pocketknife, your head cracked open with a baseball bat, your stomach
sliced open and your entrails spilled out, and your eyeballs ripped
out of their sockets. Fucking bitch

I would love to kick you hard in the face, breaking it. Then I'd cut
your stomach open with a chainsaw, exposing your intestines. Then I'd
cut your windpipe in two with a boxcutter.
Hopefully you'll get what's coming to you. Fucking bitch

I really hope that you get curb-stomped. It'd be hilarious to see you
begging for help, and then someone stomps on the back of your head,
leaving you to die in horrible, agonizing pain. Faggot
