Australian Commercial Pokes Fun At Asian Commercials

kan_tong_wok.jpg

A MetaFilter poster points to a commercial on this Australian website for Kan Tong, maker of Asian food products and sauces. The commercial imitates and pokes fun at the stereotypical Asian television spot in which the slogans are repeated over and over and actors act wacky. One one hand, it's just plain funny. On the other, as indicated by several comments on MetaFilter, it's offensive and perpetuates Asian stereotypes as envisioned by Australians.

amazing. i give it 4 stars for the sound effects. I'm going to our local oriental grocery store right now to get this stuff for my chicken dinner tonight. Spoof, naw. This is real good advertising. 5 stars for visuals.

fantastic stuff. Not too much to be offended about: if anything it's an affectionate play on the Japanese advertising aesthetic. Best use of star-bursts I've seen in a long time!

"Japanese Hand" which was originally Title "Mano japonesa" was the product of Agency Grupo Gallegos from Long Beach, Ca.
Flip Films is creadited with production
D&AD Awards, 2005 (Silver Award) for TV & Cinema gave this ad the thumbs more annoying and less entertaining. It makes me say: Thank you Tivo.

Best use of star bursts? Isn't that a contradiction in terms?

It's not especially offensive. Neither is it especially funny. It's just... anaemic, and a cheap gag.
