ESPN’s ‘Homophobic Fist Kiss’ Lays Fist Bump to Rest

shaq_espn_fist_kiss.jpg

Ah…the fist bump. That manly expression of…well, who the fuck knows? The whole fist bump thing is stupid, awkward and dumb. And has become even more so since Agency.com’s Subway video.

It has nothing to do with homophobia, as some have dubbed it when called a “fist kiss” in this Shaquille O’Neal and Mike Breen ESPN commercial, rather everything to do with some men’s odd desire to appear “yo, dude” cool or something. It’s just dumb.

So while we’ll never be one to agree with extremist cause groups and their penchant to overreact to everything, we’re siding with the gay-rights advocates – GLAAD in this case – on this one…if only to help rid the world of the stupid, idiotic, ridiculous fist bump gesture.

And if you’re fan of the fist bump, please stop. Seriously. Please stop. And if you’re in advertising, you already know once something appears in an ad, it is no longer cool. And since you all know you strive to be cool, it would be in your own best interest to stop fist bumping each other lest you want to come off looking like a Verizon Dumb Dad trying to figure out what the hell a cell phone is. Or Agency.com trying to win the Subway account.
