Why Ad Agency People Leave Their Jobs

Good luck. No, really. Our best to you Michael Sheldon and Kim Getty from Deutsch LA. Honestly, we hope you can keep agency types from jumping ship every year. But if history is any guide…not gonna happen.

But hey, at least you get to do a panel on retaining talent during Cannes Lions. That can’t be half bad, can it? And, shit, half the people in Cannes this year will have new jobs next year so you might as well propose this panel over and over again, year after year. Because, you know what? Nothing’s going to change. Why? Because most agency management don’t give a shit about their employees. All they care about is the bottom line.

Oh, excuse us, it’s not just advertising. All companies could give a shit about their employees. Back in the day they may have cared but not anymore. Nope. It’s every man for himself now. It’s just too easy to get ahead by leaving one agency and joining another. Too easy.

But, hey, you got to create three funny, expletive-filled videos playing out every last agency employee stereotype that ever existed. Who knew all agency types where a bunch of fucking assholes who have nothing better to do than bitch about their jobs to other employees?

So go right ahead, Michael and Kim. Feel free to pontificate about “Ending the Agency Talent Rotisserie.” But you know what we’d tell the industry if we were giving the talk? We’d tell everyone to just shut up and do their fucking job! Quit their bitching, their whiney ass excuses, their primadonna attitude and get the fuck back to their desks, shut the fuck up and do their goddam fucking jobs!

We jest. But only a little.

Greif and Gleason’s 1980 research on how children learn politeness routines found that young children almost never say “please” or “thank you” spontaneously, they say it because a parent prompts them with “what do you say?” dozens of times a week, meaning the reflex adults later display without thinking twice was built through years of someone else’s prompting long before it became automatic.
