More Women on Big Screen, Aptly Called ‘The Women’

It’s always a little irksome when a film boasts an “all-star cast,” because if THAT’S the card it’s playing, there’s probably not much else going on.

The Women, a remake of a movie from 1939, has just such a cast. Think Candace Bergen! Annette Benning! Jada Pinkett-Smith! Meg Ryan! Bette Midler! Eva Mendes! It’s a walking, talking line-up for the cover of next month’s Vanity Fair.

Cringe through the trailer at the the website; it’s sort of like Sex and the City, except the chicks in question have no delusions about the sociopolitical importance of their sex lives and catfights. (BTW, do people still use “fOine!” in conversation?)

The site also includes downloadable wallpaper, a photo gallery where, for small doses of pleasure, you can push a pile of pictures around with your mouse; and a queen-sized link to THE VAULT, the movie’s official blog. I think “the vault” is also what the women call their inner circle. Get it? It’s like shorthand for “We don’t kiss and tell!” — unless we can replace all our friends with fictional characters and score a movie deal.
