Jeff Jarvis Presents Citizen’s Media to Ad Agencies

At a recent BloggerCon event I attended, Advance.net President & Creative Director Jeff Jarvis led a group discussion on weblogs and other forms of media dubbed Citizen’s Media. In a nutshell, control of media is in the midst of being passed from big corporations to average citizens. Jeff has prepared a roadshow presentation which he has taken to Diamler Chrysler, BBDO and Organic. If you wish to stay ahead of the curve on this watershed shift in media creation for corporation to citizens, I urge you to contact Jeff and have him make this presentation to you. You can reach him at jeff@buzzmachine.com.

Psychology says the hardest part of watching your parents age isn’t the physical decline — it’s the moment you realize they’ve started performing competence the same way you performed adulthood when you first moved out, and you’re both pretending not to notice the act

I’m 65 and I’d tell my younger self to get comfortable with being disliked — not because it doesn’t sting but because the alternative is a life designed around other people’s comfort, and a life designed around other people’s comfort eventually has no room in it for you, and you’ll arrive at retirement with a beautifully maintained reputation and no idea who you actually are underneath it

I’m 73 and I finally understand that I’ve never actually been happy – I’ve been busy, useful, appreciated, and exhausted, but I genuinely can’t remember the last time I felt joy that didn’t come with an agenda attached to it

A letter to the mother who now asks me what day it is: I don’t mind answering. What breaks me is that you ask with the same apologetic smile you wore when I was sixteen and you forgot to pick me up from practice, as if inconveniencing me has always been your greatest fear.

I’m 73 and the moment I knew my self-taught education was worth something was when a solicitor tried to overcharge me and I caught it — not because I’d studied law but because I’d been cheated before and the first time costs you money and the second time costs them a client, and the education of being taken advantage of when you’re young and broke produces a vigilance that no lecture hall can install because the lesson is written in your own handwriting on the back of a receipt you couldn’t afford
