From panels and parties to concerts and conferences, over 200 events will take place next week in New York City during Internet Week New York from May 14-21.

More than 45,000 people are expected to attend the festival which will tout the city’s desired leadership position in digital culture, commerce, finance, fashion, media, advertising, and entertainment. Internet Week New York, which is presented by Yahoo!, will feature varied events hosted by a a number of organizations from startups like Tumblr, BuzzFeed, and Warby Parker to veteran companies like Time Inc., IAC, and AOL.

The events will be headlined by a range of thought leaders, including Bjork, Louis C.K., Billy Beane, Barry Diller, Annie Liebowitz, Anthony Bourdain, David Carr and Brian Stelter of The New York Times, and Mozilla Foundation chair Mitchell Baker.

According to Internet Week New York co-chair David-Michel Davies, there are several factors in New York’s increasingly prominent position in the digital space:

– New York City-based tech startups, which received nearly $500 million in venture capital investments in 2011, will be celebrated at Time Inc.’s 10 NYC Startups to Watch, while dozens more of the city’s startups, including OMGPOP, Boxee, and Codecademy, will welcome festival-goers during a citywide open house on May 18th.

– With women twice as likely to start new companies in New York than in Silicon Valley, Internet Week New York will feature discussions with founders of the city’s leading women-led startups, including Birchbox, Artspace, and Fashism, as well as networking brunches and meetups for women in the tech industry.

– New York will highlight its position as an arts and culture center with storytelling nights at Housing Works Bookstore Café and The Loom in Bushwick, concerts like Last.fm Live at Webster Hall and Girls Who Rock & FlashFWD at the Gramercy Theater (we’ll be there), and exhibits at Internet Week New York Headquarters, The Museum of the Moving Image, The W Hotel Times Square, Soho Gallery or Art, and the World Financial Center Winter Garden.

– The city’s tech industry provides full-time employment for more than 25,000 people. New Yorkers looking to break into the industry or grow their careers and businesses can take classes in the Internet Week HQ at 82 Mercer on everything from coding to app-building or attend a wide-range of sessions on topics like mastering the art of food blogging or the secrets to creating a viral video.

“There is literally something for everyone at this year’s festival, whether you are an iPad-carrying entrepreneur, a cultural thrill-seeker, or a social media fanatic,” said Davies. “The festival lineup captures the groundswell of energy and creativity in New York by shining a spotlight on everything from the city’s top startups to its innovation in digital culture and media to the women-led, New York-based companies re-shaping the industry.”
