IKEA Web Series, or Portent of Things to Come?

IKEA’s first webisode stars Illeana Douglas, who arrives on-set as a spokesperson but is mistaken for an employee. The ensuing adventure involves Jeff Goldblum, Tom Arnold, Justine Bateman, Jane Lynch, Craig Bierko, and Kevin Pollack.

You could play the video without the sound on and probably lose none of the impact. I felt only a blandly receptive response to the cheery color palette.

As my eyes glazed over the imagery, it occurred to me that someday we’ll all live in neat prefab pods with Scandinavian names, wearing monochromatic shirts in cheerful hues, telling jokes both comic and facile as an expressionless deejay plays elevator music in the background.

Every step of our bare feet will hit springy astroturf grass. Flowers, mostly cut out of an ancient daffodil template, will be made out of silk. And, contented as dolls, we will never know the lives we lost.

Watch future IKEA webisodes on EasytoAssemble.tv — a surprisingly apt metaphor for our futures. As furniture.
