If the World Has to Be Divvied, It Might As Well Be for a Sport

Nike and Major League Baseball play on the United Colors of Benetton to give us the United Countries of Baseball, a world segmented by team allegiances instead of by states or countries.

The idea is to map the “borders of fan loyalty.” Each baseball-playing country has its own map, alongside posters with player nicknames specific to each territory.

The campaign was orchestrated by Cole & Weber United.

We actually didn’t think baseball had a rabid fan base any longer. Post-steroids scandal, it looks like basketball is taking the whole “American Dream” torch. See recent promotions for Dwyane Wade and Monta Ellis.

My adult son called last Sunday and talked for forty minutes about his promotion and his new house and his kids and then said “anyway how are you dad” with ninety seconds left in the call — and I said “I’m good” because what else do you say when you realize you’ve become the commercial break in your own child’s life

I’m 66 and I’ve been disciplined about everything my entire life – diet, exercise, savings, career – and last Tuesday I realized I’ve never once done something purely because it brought me joy without immediately calculating whether it was also productive or healthy or advancing some goal

I’m 73 and I can tell you that the loneliest thing about getting older isn’t the empty house — it’s watching your children build traditions that don’t include you and pretending you’re happy for them because the alternative is becoming the mother who made it about herself
