15-Year-Old Mentality + Naked Cheerleaders = Beer Ad

Let’s be clear right up front. This is a terrible ad. Not because it pokes fun at the wandering attention span of men when faced with the choice of listening to one’s spouse prattle on about paint colors or ogling hot women in bikinis teasingly caressing each other. No. But because it looks like it was produced inside the mind of a 15 year old boy in heat peeping through a hole into the girls locker room where the cheerleading squad is in various stages of undress suiting up for their football game appearance.

When the email came in notifying us of this Lighthouse Brewing commercial produced by Ryan Mains and Suzan Derkson at Politically Incorrect Entertainment, it tread, “Are we really this lame in the ad world?” After viewing this commercial, we’re quite sure many of you will respond to that question with a resounding “yes.”

But is anyone really surprised? This is business-as-usual beer marketing. Lowest common denominator concepting designed to appeal to the broadest possible swath of beer swilling idiots who, according to marketers, seemingly posses the worldly knowledge of…a 15 year old boy in heat staring through a peephole into the girls locker room where half naked cheerleaders are changing into their skimpy cheering outfits.

I’m 66 and the person who shaped me most wasn’t my father or my mother, it was a history teacher named Mr. Collins who looked at me in 1976 and said “you’re capable of more than this”—and those six words rerouted my entire life because nobody at home had ever suggested that the direction I was heading wasn’t the only direction available, and I’ve built a career, a family, and a sense of self on a sentence spoken by a man I haven’t seen in 40 years

Research suggests the people who make others light up when they first meet them aren’t more charming than everyone else — they’re more curious, and curiosity turns out to be the most flattering thing one person can offer another because it says your existence is interesting, which is the thing almost everyone is waiting to hear and almost no one says
